No. Students and staff cannot access a district-owned Chromebook with any other login other than their district-assigned email. For example, students will not be able log in to their personal Gmail account on a district-provided Chromebook. However, if a student logs into another device with their school username (a PC laptop, a school lab computer, a loaner Chromebook, etc.) all of their information (bookmarks, emails, documents, desktop, applications, etc.) will be available to them on that device when using the Chrome browser.
Teaching appropriate use is more important than filtering.
The most important step you can take is establishing expectations around appropriate use on the web and help your child develop an internal filter.
We do our best to ensure the online experience is safe. Before each Chromebook device connects to the Internet, it must pass through district network firewalls and filters. This happens whether the device is browsing on campus or school-owned networks. What about home? The Chromebook will also have a safe browsing feature built into the image that cannot be adjusted safeguarding your student from inappropriate materials at home. If your child is using the Chromebook at school, at home or at a public library, it will always pass through this filtering and network firewall system before they can see or access web content. Our web filters are programmed to block inappropriate content. As with any device connected to the internet, it is impossible to keep all inappropriate material from being accessed if actively pursued by the user. Students who are found to be actively pursuing inappropriate material will be referred to the building administrators.
- Talk with your child about what they are doing online and have them show you what they do and where they go online.

- Keep a line of communication open where you can share questions or concerns.
- Track your student’s progress through the parent portal.
- Consider the “paper equivalent” in difficult computing situations
- Consider how would you handle the off-task or inappropriate activity if it happened with pencil and paper instead of on a computer?
- What were your expectations around technology and computing, and do they mirror those expectations for respect and proper behavior at home?
Digital online file sharing between staff and students is one of the great advantages of the Chromebooks and is an easy and efficient way to distribute and turn in assignments without printing. It also saves on paper, ink and toner use, thereby saving the district and parents money.
